Lights in classrooms, corridors, dorms, and security points.

You can switch lights by room, by block, or on a schedule. The system also tells you when lights have been left on after they should be off, and when a fixture is starting to fail.

Lights are usually the single biggest source of waste on a Kenyan school's electricity bill, but it is rarely because the bulbs are inefficient. Most of the time it is because they get left on — the corridor lights in an empty hostel wing at 2 in the morning, the classroom strips on after the last Friday lesson, the security lights still burning at 9am.

What you get

Control by room or by block

You can switch the lights for the whole compound, or just the dorms, or just one classroom — for example only the Form 3 South corridor — depending on what you need.

Catching lights left on

If a classroom strip light is still on between 10pm and 5:30am and the room is not scheduled to be in use, the system can be set to switch it off and send the estates manager a notification, so they know it happened and can find out why.

Catching failing bulbs before they go out

We log how much current each light fixture draws over time. When a bulb or a ballast is starting to fail, the reading drifts in a recognisable way for several days before the light actually stops working, so we can flag it for replacement in advance.

Security lights on a sensible schedule

Security lights can be set to come on at dusk and go off at first light, with manual override for school events. You stop seeing floodlights still burning at 9 in the morning.

A real situation

What happened

Corridor lights in the empty boys' dorm wing have been on for 4 hours.

What we did about it

System kills the circuit. Morning report shows it. Estates team checks if the timer was overridden — finds the cleaner flipped it for a 22:00 sweep and forgot. Schedule adjusted.
